Ladies Day at the Devon Horse Show

The oldest and largest outdoor multi-breed horse competition in the United States takes place right in Philadelphia’s backyard! The Devon Horse Show, started in 1896, is just as famous for its champion jumpers and carriages as it is for its shops, midway games, and classy Main Line style. (Oh, and the lemon sticks.) And believe me, on Ladies Day that style was out in force! I (with friends Rosie and Kelly) went to the show grounds on Ladies Day for the annual hat contest. (Because really, why would you go to a horse show and not wear a hat? I say! What what! Tally-ho! Et cetera.) The hats didn’t disappoint—but neither did the shoes! I am a heel addict, but even I know that the uneven ground and gravel pathways aren’t stiletto-friendly. That didn’t stop these ladies!

On one of the hat contest judges. Red satin, tan leather, silver studs, a solid base—and we all just loved her gold toenails!

On another of the judges. I just adore these—look at the elaborate cut-outs and the statement bows!

These were Rosie’s favorites: clear Lucite wedge, delicate silver straps, just enough sparkle. Very appropriate for a hot day!

Black and white was a huge theme at the Horse Show on Ladies Day—these shoes just exemplified that idea, with their sharp contrast stitching and flowers across the toe.

The trademark red sole of Christian Louboutin. It is the Main Line, after all!

And, finally, Horse Show perennial Carson Kressley (formerly of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy). Got to love the white pants as well! Like Carson could be anything but fabulous.

Thanks to Rosie for her surreptitious shoe photography!

The Devon Horse Show runs through Sunday, and admission starts at $8 for a grounds pass. Live in the city and don’t have a car? Not a problem! Take the train formerly known as the R5 Paoli/Thorndale line to the Devon stop—the grounds are walking distance from the station. Look for the big Ferris wheel; that’ll point you in the right direction.
