Philadelphia Science Festival

You may have noticed over the past year that I am a bit of a nerd.  (See exhibit A.  And B.  And C.)  But nothing makes my inner geek rejoice like the Philadelphia Science Festival, starting today!  Every science organization in the city (and then some) have gotten together to fill ten days to the brim with science.  Science quizzo, open lab day, robots, food, science films, networking and “Meet and Geek”... there are just too many things to choose from!

But if I had to pull out just a few gems, I’d start with Astronomy Night, next Friday, April 27.  More than 20 venues in and around Philadelphia (from universities to community centers, wildlife refuges to cemeteries) will host star parties. At each site, professional and amateur astronomers will bring out their telescopes to show locals the wonders of the night sky. Participants can also make take-home star-wheels!

The Lannaa by Steve Madden is like wearing the night sky, isn’t it?  It has a 4.5-inch heel and a .75-inch platform, along with a suede upper studded with rhinestones.  Also available in bright blue ($70) and blush ($98), but the black’ll run you $88 from Endless.

Astronomy not your thing?  How about historical forensic science?  Head to the Mütter Museum instead that night to explore the forensics behind the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.  Following a live re-enactment of the assassination, guests will interactively explore the crime scene using forensic methods available in the 1860s; then they’ll hear from a roster of today’s forensic experts covering topics like ballistics, crime scene investigation, and blood analysis to see what has changed and what hasn’t.

The Maudie by Loeffler Randall is very Civil War—except for that four-inch heel!  A canvas and leather upper, laces all the way up the front—charming.  Find them on Zappos for $283.

Don’t forget the opening event: the Science Carnival!  A hundred exhibitors fill the Ben Franklin Parkway tomorrow from 11:00 AM-4:00 PM, where you can meet an astronaut, learn about oil spills or the making of cheese, or figure out the chemistry that keeps cupcakes from crumbling!

Oh, they’re so cute with their little bow ties—they got dressed up for their big day at the Science Carnival!  And look at their sparkly rhinestone “cherries”!  And their rosy cheeks and smiling faces!  Cute overload!!  Oh, and they’re Mary Janes, too, just to add to the cuteness.  Find them from Etsy seller Em & Sprout in whole sizes from 6-9 for $24.

Whatever you decide to attend, go and learn and marvel at the wonder of science.  It’s going to be an amazing week!

  2. Yes, I started it for a class and it sort of took off! It turns one next week-- I'm throwing a party at the DSW in KoP to celebrate. :-)

I also love the cupcake! It's totally my favorite of these three.
