The Art of the Brick

Legos: they’re so much more than the bane of barefoot parents everywhere.  They’re an American classic.  They’re a tool for creative imagination.  And now, at the Franklin Institute, they’re works of art!

Their new exhibit, The Art of the Brick, features over a hundred Lego creations made from more than a million Lego bricks, all from the mind of famed contemporary artist Nathan Sawaya. This collection of sculptures includes a variety of Sawaya’s original concepts as well as a 20-foot-long Tyrannosaurus Rex made from over 80,000 Lego bricks. Also on display are interpretations of historic works such as Leonardo Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry Night, and Edvard Munch’s The Scream—all made entirely of Lego bricks!  This ain’t no Lego tree house, people.

Know what else looks cool with Legos?  Shoes, of course!

Move over, bunnies—how cool are these?  This pair of cozy slippers are in the iconic form of the Lego brick, but I promise these are way better to step on than the original.  Also available in red; your choice for $30 on Amazon.

These canvas flats are hand-painted with the cheery characters of The Lego Movie!  There’s a second design as well, with different characters, in case your favorite is missing from this pair.  (Good news: Batman is on both.)  Yours for $44 from Bonanza.

Oh, and just in case you (1) LOVE Legos and (2) are getting married, here’s a very sparkly pair just for you!  A Lego groom and bride top the toes of this pair of flats, with glittery stripes in all the colors of the rainbow working their way towards the heel.  (Separated by bands of rhinestones, because you can never have too many rhinestones.)  Find them at Etsy seller WickedAddiction for $95.

Anybody else have “Everything is Awesome!” running through their head now?  EVERYTHING IS AWESOME!!!
