How About a Mojito?

I come across a lot of shoes when I write these posts.  Sometimes it feels like there’s nothing that could be out that there that would astonish me.

And then I found these:

What?  Just… what?  What are these?!

You are looking at the Mojito by Julian Hakes.  It is simultaneously the most elegant and absolutely weirdest shoe I’ve ever seen.  Hakes, an architect, was thinking about heels and realized that really, your weight is distributed between the ball of your foot and your heel.  Now the engineering: “I began exploring these questions in a similar way to how I would design a building or a bridge,” says Hakes, “examining the load path and looking at the most simple, elegant yet poetic expression of the forces at play within the materials used.”

He named his creation the Mojito, because it looks like a twist of lime.  (Can’t argue there!)  Look at it on feet:

The frontmost twist doesn’t quite cross the toes all the way; the back just barely holds your ankle.  Not to mention there's nothing under the bridge of your foot at all!  It’s weird.  But in a way, it works!  The outer is polycarbonate, the lining is leather, and the sole is rubber.  And it comes in a ton of colors!  Many are still in the works, but many more can be found at Jules B.  The blue and pink combo shown here runs you about $173.

The pattern on this pair (“Carbon”) is messing with my brain a little, but I really dig it with the orange!  Yours for $175.

This red and yellow pair is very tropical-feeling, isn’t it?  Like flowers, or a sunset… or a Sex on the Beach, with a little paper umbrella.  Mmmm.  This pair is $174.

How about white and pink?

I love this combo.  It may be my favorite.  If it’s yours, pick up a pair for $192.

Ooh, chrome!  Come on; you have to love the chrome.  This pair is $192 (but it’s out of stock at the moment, so put your name in).

You know, for less than $200, it’s hard to think of a more amazing shoe you could get.  No one else will have it.  Everyone will want to look at it.  It’s so nice and open for summer.  It is a piece of art you can wear.  Kudos, Julian Hakes.  I look forward to your next amazing design.
