It’s Mardi Gras!
It doesn’t get more fun than Mardi Gras: parades, beads, costumes… not
to mention New Orleans, which is fun any day of the year. Mardi Gras down there is a whole season, by
the way, not just a single day—parades started over a month ago. Each krewe has its own. There are dozens.
But there’s one parade I want to bring to your
attention, and it belongs to the Krewe of Muses. Why this particular all-female krewe?
Reason
number one: look at their signature float.
Ohmygod ohmygod ohmygod, it’s a GIANT LIGHT UP
SHOE! That year’s honorary muse gets
a spot of honor in the shoe.
Reason
number two: there are even more shoes all along the parade.
I’m not sure what exactly you’d call those, but
they are definitely shoes.
Reason
number three: look at the beads and goodies they throw.
Shoes!
Shoes everywhere! That’s two
different kinds of shoe beads (they pick a different signature shoe each year)
and a bracelet made of tiny black and silver shoes. See it there, just to the right of the
middle?
Reason
number four: THEY THROW SHOES FROM THE FLOATS. ACTUAL SHOES.
The krewe hand-decorates dozens of shoes with
glitter and feathers and flowers and throws them from the floats. (Ugh, they’re too gorgeous; I can’t stand it.) First of all, watch your head, because I
imagine concussions could ensue. Second
of all, GET OUT OF MY WAY I WANT ONE.
Reason number five: they’ve brewed a seasonal
beer, which is cool enough on its own, but just LOOK at the tap handle for
it:
AAH, it’s pink and black and topped with a glitter
shoe!! My heart. I just can’t take it.
The krewe is so popular they’re no longer accepting members. (No wonder!)
Learn more about the krewe, its history, and its fondness for high heels
here. Oh, upcoming business trip to New Orleans,
why couldn’t you have come three weeks early so I could go to this magical
parade?! *Fruitless grasping motion.*
