If you’ve been wondering why you’re seeing people
in costume around the convention center lately, it’s because we’re in the
middle of Wizard World Comic
Con! It’s the second-largest and
second-oldest show that Wizard World does, so our city has some serious geek
cred right now.
Except me.
While I am a
legit nerd,
I don’t have much geek cred. (In fact, last
week I was chased out of my work lunchroom since I was being thoroughly
out-geeked and had nothing to contribute.)
I love Sherlock and Harry Potter, but I mostly watched The Avengers and the new Star Trek because the men are hot. (Looking at you, Captain
America!) I’m not ashamed to admit
it.
You know what does have geek cred? These shoes.
Plus they cover so many of the different geek passions featured at Comic
Con!
Sci-fi:
These flats are an homage to everyone’s favorite
golden worrywart, C-3PO! The almond toes
feature the circle and wires from the droid’s chest, and they’ve got his name
emblazoned right on the back. In
glitter! It’s all glitter! Yours for $50 from Bonanza.
Manga:
In case you can’t tell from the big eyes and
blonde hair, these shoes are covered in pages from Sailor Moon comics—even down
the inside of the heel! No part is left
uncovered. Plus the paper is lacquered
multiple times and then topped with an acrylic sealer, so you don’t have to
worry about peeling. Yours for $90 from
Etsy seller Sweet
Dream Shoes.
Superheroes:
Wonder Woman, of course! These boots are made for kicking ass, with
their five-inch heel, white racing stripe, and pointed front. Oh, and they’re patent leather, which is
pretty sexy. BYO indestructible bracelets,
but you can find these for $59 from HalloweenCostumes.com.
And general geekery:
These glittery beauties are a mix of The Starry Night and Dr. Who! Gold swirls and flashes accompany a set of
blue TARDISes, and there’s a smattering of clear rhinestones for good measure. Etsy seller Made
by Bunny does the work for $150, but you provide the shoes—so try to find a
pair with sonic screwdrivers for the heels, would you?
Comic Con runs through Sunday only, so grab your
tickets and go! That will seriously up
your geek cred.
Oh, and if
you’re curious as to how much of this I knew and how much I had to look up:
I knew: C-3PO worries; what a TARDIS looks like; that a sonic screwdriver is
approximately the same size and shape of a high heel.
I had to verify: what part of C-3PO they took the design from; that C-3PO is a droid; what
manga is; that Wonder Woman has indestructible bracelets.
