Philadelphia Science Festival

We are smack dab in the middle of eleven days of SCIENCE!  The Philadelphia Science Festival is back and better than ever.  Like spicy food?  There’s science behind it.  Thirsty for a beer?  That’s science too.  A Sherlock Holmes fan?  Of course there’s science.  Having trouble deciding which events to go to?  Might I suggest these three?

Tomorrow at 5:00 PM, head over to the Chemical Heritage Foundation and immerse yourself in the world of the fishes.  Learn how an ocean expedition to Papua New Guinea in the early 20th century helps today’s scientists understand and protect the coral reefs; create a lasting memory by a lesson in gyotaku, traditional Japanese fish printing; and finish with a turn around CHF’s newest exhibit, X-Ray Vision: Fish Inside Out.

The Catch of the Day by Dan Sullivan is a fish!  Your toes stick through its fishy little mouth!  That’s kind of cool.  And just look at all the fabrics that go into this… so much detail.  It’s got a 4.7-inch heel and a 1.3-inch platform, and can be yours for $295 from Irregular Choice.

Friday is Astronomy Night!  Grab a blanket and tour the cosmos. Professional and amateur astronomers will bring out their telescopes to show locals the wonders of the night sky. More than 20 venues in and around Philadelphia — from universities to community centers, wildlife refuges to cemeteries — will host star parties. The festivities start at 6:00 this year, giving families the chance to do some sun gazing.

The Galaxy Wedge by Vintage Shoes is like something straight from the Hubble Space Telescope, isn’t it?  It’s got a five-inch heel, and I’m digging the red laces—nice touch!  Find them at Punk.com for $60.

This Saturday, zombie alert at Laurel Hill Cemetery! Just what does it mean to be dead? And if there ever was a “zombie” virus, what would happen to our brains?  How would we protect ourselves? Get a debriefing on this and more with a live zombie autopsy, a “spirited” zombie body parts scavenger hunt, and other-worldly science demos. Afterwards, party like the living dead with refreshments, drinks and zombie activities.

Zombie alert indeed!  The Zombie Stomper Flats by Iron Fist are round toe flats printed with the face (or, er, what’s left of the face) of a grimacing green zombie.  Which might be gruesome, but I do love that little black bow on the back!  Girlies it right up.  Yours for $28 from The Scream Store (whole sizes only).

Life Aquatic at the Chemical Heritage Foundation and Astronomy Night are free!  The Morgue, the Merrier at Laurel Hill is $25 and you can get tickets online.  But wherever you go, have a science-tastic time!

Forget Me Not Revue

Looking for something to do this weekend?  Do I have an idea for you!  Saturday at 7:00 PM is the Forget Me Not Revue, a belly dance spectacular!  Some of the area’s premier belly dancers (and some big names from out of town) will be coming together at Chaplin’s, an old vaudeville theater in Spring City.  (It’s legit, folks—it’s called Chaplin’s because Charlie Chaplin performed there.)  And on Saturday, my troupe will be performing there!  We’re capping the night with a burlesque-influenced piece to Lady Marmalade from Moulin Rouge!  In the spirit, here are some sexy burlesque-style shoes!

The Sweet Dreams by Poetic License is fabulous!  Not just your average black peep toe pump, it also has polka dot netting up the front, flowers on the side, and a drawstring around the ankle to frill it up.  Adorable!  Find them on Amazon for about $50.  (Also available in a super-cute pink if you’re a size 6!)

This lovely Victorian-style boot has lace panels and delicately tooled faux leather.  They have a two-inch heel, dramatically styled pointy upper, and laces all the way up the front.  Love them?  Find them at BuyCostumes for $55.

The Augustina by Gwyneth is subtle sexy: black lace over royal blue (or bronze), pleated around the foot.  These peep-toes have a .75-inch platform and 4.75-inch heel, and can be found at DSW for $90.

Look at the tassels on the Banana Sandwich by Dan Sullivan!  Perfect for stage.  It has an almost-six-inch heel, a two-inch platform, and sass to spare.  They won’t be available until the end of July, but keep an eye on Irregular Choice and find that extra $420 you stashed somewhere!

Tickets to the Forget Me Not Revue are $15 in advance or $20 at the door.  Food is available at Chaplin’s in case you’re hungry, and it’s a BYO too!  Bring a friend, a bottle of your favorite, and settle in for a fun night of belly dancing.
