It's Cookie Time!

Out of the depths of frigid winter comes a ray of hope: Girl Scout Cookies!  Is there anything happier than the first time you see a troop of small girls yelling “GIRL SCOUT COOKIES!!!” at you in Market East on your way home from work?  If there is, I don’t know it.  And everyone’s got their favorite—you could spend an hour arguing about the merits of Mango Crèmes versus Thank You Berry Munch, but most people go for the classics.  Like Thin Mints:

Black and green: just like the interplay between chocolate and mint!  And even better: Poetic License named it the Sweet Ending, which is so Thin Mint appropriate!  It has a contrast lace outer, tied at the front with a minty green ribbon, and finished with a brown basket-weave 3.25-inch heel.  Also available in gray and eggplant; your choice for between $53 and $98 on Amazon.

Or the coconut and caramel goodness of Caramel deLites:

The Marloww by Madden Girl remind me of the skinny flakes of coconut and the swirly drizzles of chocolate that make this cookie so tasty.  And look at all the gold studs!  Fancy.  They have a half-inch heel and a zipper up the back to let you in.  Also available in black with silver studs or gold fabric with gold studs; take your pick for $40 on Zappos.

Or my new favorite: Lemonades!

The Mexa by Type Z is so yellowy and springy!  And I like how the satin ruffle around the heel is vaguely reminiscent of lemony frosting being poured on the back of a cookie.  (What?  That’s just me?)  The body of the round toe shoe is satin as well, but the 5.25-inch heel and 1.25-inch platform are in shiny yellow patent leather.  Also available in black, champagne, a fiery orange, purple, and a really sweet pink—the colors run between $27 and $49 and can be found at 6pm.

Whichever is your favorite, go buy some cookies and help the Girl Scouts.  Everyone wins!  Get them before they’re gone!

With this, her fifth tip submitted to Philly Shoe Fairy, Deputy Shoe Fairy Maria Gianfrancisco becomes our very first Lieutenant Shoe Fairy!  Congratulations Maria!  I salute you.

Fly, Eagles Fly!

Fly, Eagles fly, on the road to victory!
Fight, Eagles fight, score a touchdown 1–2–3!
Hit 'em low, hit 'em high,
And watch our Eagles fly!
Fly, Eagles fly, on the road to victory!
E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!

Any Eagles fan knows that their team’s home opener (against the Ravens) is this Sunday at 1:00 PM.  You have your jersey.  You have your favorite wings recipe.  You have... wait!  What about your shoes?  No good—if they’re not “midnight green” they don’t count.  Fear not!  Shoe Fairy to the rescue!

The Jaxon by G by Guess is a very sleek suede ankle boot—I think that black at the top really makes it (though the shiny silver buckle doesn’t hurt!).  A solid 4.5-inch heel and 1.5-inch platform complete the look.  Also available in black or a really rich magenta; yours for $60 from DSW.

The Gillie by Vivienne Westwood + Melissa has a synthetic upper (looks like an opaque jelly!) and laces criss-crossing up the foot with multiple ties around the ankle.  I love the round toe with the stripe up the front—a subtle touch.  Also available in black, blue, red, and a very cool metallic pink; find them at Zappos for $200.

The Vena by MIA is a classic leather flat with an almond-shaped toe—perfect for work or the weekend!  Also available in navy, pink, and burgundy, so there’s an option for whatever your mood!  Check them out at 6pm, and take them home for $42.  (Not bad for a leather flat!)

A little fancy for tailgating, maybe, but the Royal Occasion by Poetic License is kind of fun!  It starts as a peep toe slingback d’Orsay, but finishes with a swirl of rhinestones across the foot.  Also available in red, gray, yellow, or black; your choice from Endless for $59.

Whatever your choice, grab some buds, grab some chips, and let’s go Eagles!

Forget Me Not Revue

Looking for something to do this weekend?  Do I have an idea for you!  Saturday at 7:00 PM is the Forget Me Not Revue, a belly dance spectacular!  Some of the area’s premier belly dancers (and some big names from out of town) will be coming together at Chaplin’s, an old vaudeville theater in Spring City.  (It’s legit, folks—it’s called Chaplin’s because Charlie Chaplin performed there.)  And on Saturday, my troupe will be performing there!  We’re capping the night with a burlesque-influenced piece to Lady Marmalade from Moulin Rouge!  In the spirit, here are some sexy burlesque-style shoes!

The Sweet Dreams by Poetic License is fabulous!  Not just your average black peep toe pump, it also has polka dot netting up the front, flowers on the side, and a drawstring around the ankle to frill it up.  Adorable!  Find them on Amazon for about $50.  (Also available in a super-cute pink if you’re a size 6!)

This lovely Victorian-style boot has lace panels and delicately tooled faux leather.  They have a two-inch heel, dramatically styled pointy upper, and laces all the way up the front.  Love them?  Find them at BuyCostumes for $55.

The Augustina by Gwyneth is subtle sexy: black lace over royal blue (or bronze), pleated around the foot.  These peep-toes have a .75-inch platform and 4.75-inch heel, and can be found at DSW for $90.

Look at the tassels on the Banana Sandwich by Dan Sullivan!  Perfect for stage.  It has an almost-six-inch heel, a two-inch platform, and sass to spare.  They won’t be available until the end of July, but keep an eye on Irregular Choice and find that extra $420 you stashed somewhere!

Tickets to the Forget Me Not Revue are $15 in advance or $20 at the door.  Food is available at Chaplin’s in case you’re hungry, and it’s a BYO too!  Bring a friend, a bottle of your favorite, and settle in for a fun night of belly dancing.

Party Redux

Well, here we are on the other side of Philly Shoe Fairy’s first birthday!  I think the party was a rousing success—thank you to all who came to celebrate!  I am happy to report that many found just the pair of shoes they were looking for... maybe two!  Here are some shoes that found happy homes Sunday morning:

This bright number went home with Rosie: “I’ve been looking for red shoes forever!”  The Minnie by Liz Claiborne are red patent leather peep-toe slingbacks with a 2.5-inch heel—perfect for work!  You can find them online at DSW.com for $40 (also available in navy and beige), but Rosie got hers for 30% off!

Another pair of red shoes went home with Maria:

“Look at the way they shine and change color in the light!  The epitome of cuteness and class,” she gushes.  And she’s right: the Vega by Sofft are black cherry beauties practically glow from inside.  They have a 2.75-inch heel, sweet buckle, and round toe, and while they’re not on DSW.com, you can find them at SeaSoles for $69 (but Maria got hers for 30% off too!).

Mia picked up two pairs—a sneaker and a heel:

“Classic snakeskin in lavender with a feminine bow and my go-to walking shoe!”  The heel is the Pippy by Moda Spana, and while technically the color is listed as “taupe” Mia and I both agree it looks like a soft lavender.  It has a 3.75-inch stacked heel and a three-quarter-inch cork platform, and you can find them on DSW.com for $60 (also available in yellow!).

The sneaker is the Gel Cumulus by Asics.  It has cushioning designed especially for women’s feet and a ton of other features... apparently even the eyelets that hold the laces were specially placed!  I can’t find them at DSW.com, but they are at Lady Foot Locker for $95 (though Mia got hers for 30% off!).

Renee left with two pairs as well!

“If it has chains I probably love it,” she says.  And the Ariel by Mix No. 6 (on the right) certainly has chains—and flowers and beads and awesomeness.  Check them out for yourself at DSW.com—they come in the red multi Renee got, and also a nude and brown combo.  Both beautiful; each $45.

“I’m not a flower girl but I just love these!” Renee said of the Apple of my Eye by Poetic License.  It’s got a 4.25-inch heel and one-inch platform in a lovely blue, with a bronze strap across the toe with three tulle roses and patterned fabric up the front and around the ankle.  Also available in a cool red combo; while I can’t find them at DSW.com they are at 6pm for $43.

Shoes were bought; prizes were won; fun was had; shoevenger hunts were completed; muffins were eaten.  A very, very special thank you to Nancy (the KoP DSW manager) and her wonderful, wonderful staff!  If I ever go into the shoe-selling business, I want it to be with them.  They were beyond fantastic!

What the Dickens?

Any man may be in good spirits and good temper when he’s well dressed.

Charles Dickens was a bright man!  Sometimes all it takes to improve our disposition is wearing something fabulous... like a new pair of shoes!  In fact, today (this very day) is 200 years since Mr. Dickens was born, and the Free Library is hosting a year-long celebration of his life and works in honor of his bicentennial.  In the spirit of all things Dickens, I give you some Victorian-inspired shoes!

The Lady Victoria by Poetic License is a beauty: delicately shaped leather details, floral needlepoint fabric, velvet laces, all on a 2.25-inch heel.  Available in bone (shown) or brown from Endless for $112-$169.

This dark beauty is leather and lace, Victorian-style!  A two-inch heel, black faux leather, black lace over a red upper, and shiny black buttons up the side.  (A zipper on the other side lets you in.)  Whole sizes only; find them at Halloween Express for $66.

The Funtasma by Pleaser is a vision in gold: gold faux leather with punch detailing, gold lace, even gold laces!  It also has a 1.75-inch heel.  Also available in ivory (Victorian wedding boot, anyone?) from Endless for $55.

You can also find it in a really awesome black and gold print:

That black patent leather patch on the toe?  Killer.  Oh, and if it wasn’t yet awesome enough, it’s lined in red fabric!  These are about $50 on Amazon.

The Marge Peep Toe Bootie by Timberland Boot Company has beautiful scalloped detailing, four buttons, contrast piping, a 3.25-inch stacked heel, and a zipper up the side to let you in.  Also available in black and a really lovely mauve from 6pm for $141.

This Victorian ankle boot is girly-tastic!  Black lace over pink (or nude or red) and ruffled around the ankle; a nice three-inch heel as well.  Whole sizes only; pick up yours for $66 from By the Sword.

Whichever pair you pick, be sure to pick up some of Dickens’ work too for his 200th birthday.  And celebrate all year long with activities by the Free Library!  This month: Fireside Readings and Brunch at The Dandelion.  Every Sunday this month, show up at The Dandelion at 10 AM or noon for a reading and, I don’t know, brioche French toast or poached eggs with bubbles and squeak.  Really, I don’t see how you can go wrong.

Nutcracker Sweets

I have such a soft spot for The Nutcracker—the story is just so magical. Little girl gets doll, doll saves girl (and girl saves doll) from giant murderous mice, doll becomes handsome prince, and they spend a whole act in the most magical of courts, with dancing sweets and exotic cultures and beautiful ballerinas. Why can’t life be like that?! Next best thing—see a version of the show live. The Pennsylvania Ballet has their version, of course, and as a history nerd I have always been intrigued by the Rock Dance Project’s Nutcracker 1776. If you’re going, get in the spirit! Say, of the Chinese tea dance:
These strappy sandals come in either black and red or black and gold—I think the weaving at the toe is really nice. If you agree, they can be yours (whole sizes only!) for $52 from WildFree. Prefer the Russian candy cane dance? So festive! Red glitter, white stripes, a bow at the peep toe, four-inch heels—just be careful on those crazy stairs on the upper balconies of the Academy! These are worth it, though. Sizes 6-10 (whole sizes only) from Just for Costumes for $43. Or perhaps the Sugar Plum Fairy was always your favorite: So many lovely purples in the Sweet Ending by Poetic Licence—the satin laces, the leather upper with black lace overlay, the delicately patterned three-inch heel. These are real beauties. Also available in gray or green; yours for $88 from Zappos. You know who I always liked? The mice! You’d be Mouse Queen in these, baby! The Orpha15 Dark Grey Lady Fur Boots by Miss Me have a 4.25-inch heel, one-inch hidden platform, and a suede-like outer with fur details. Get a pair for $40 from Shoes19.com. If you’re lucky enough to be dancing in a version of The Nutcracker this season, I have it on good authority that these are the shoes you want to be dancing in: The pointe shoes from Gaynor Minden may look like your ordinary pointe shoe, but it’s what on the inside that counts. They are made of modern materials in their shanks and boxes, so they last longer than an ordinary pointe shoe (three to five times longer!). It has honest-to-goodness shock-absorbing material in the toe. (So squishy!) They have a beautiful performance arch. You don’t need to break them in. And they are super quiet—no more banging around on the boards! Yours for $98. The Pennsylvania Ballet’s version of The Nutcracker runs through New Year’s Eve. I’m afraid you’ve missed your chance at Nutcracker 1776 for this year, though, so be sure to put it in your calendar for next year.

Sales this weekend: Sorry ladies, I've been out for work and haven't been able to check. Good luck with your hunting!

Philly Fringe

Rejoice, culture lovers: the Philly Fringe Festival is here! Two weeks, tons of shows, something for everyone. Yay! In the spirit of the festival, here are some avant garde shoe/show pairs you might enjoy.

WHaLE OPTICS is a modern Moby Dick adventure (with microphones instead of harpoons). This mythic tale follows a composer chasing whale songs on a seemingly accidental quest from New York to the wilds of Colombia's Pacific coast to the white icescapes of Antarctica.

The Beckery by Jessica Simpson is a blue suede peep toe pump on a two-inch cutout platform with a 5.25-inch cutout heel. (Seriously, check out the other angles online. The side view is FIERCE.) Also available in cranberry or purple; pick up a pair at Macy’s for $98.

Look up! Philadelphia School of Circus Arts presents a dazzling flight back to 1900s Paris with The Green Fairy Cabaret. Fly with the Green Fairy as she presents aerial and acrobatic feats, plus comedy, juggling, and spectacular physical skills. Daytime performances are family-friendly. Nighttime shows have special rewards. Equal measures vintage and trippy—just like absinthe! The Perfectly Lovely by Poetic License has a velvet upper, a 4.5-inch heel and .75-inch platform covered in multicolor glitter, and elastic heel strap with a bow. Pick up a pair at DSW for $70.

When their plane crashes on a deserted island, a group of schoolboys learn where evil truly lives. Curio Theatre Company presents this unique outdoor experience of William Golding’s Lord of the Flies in Clark Park. Come see the darkness within mankind and yell, “Kill the Pig!”

The Kevan Feather Trim Gladiator Sandal by Jimmy Choo are a work of art. An elaborate leather and mesh upper, a cascade of colorful feathers, a 4.25 inch heel... you’d be queen of the island in these, baby. Yours for $2,495 from Nordstrom.

WHaLE OPTICS, September 1-11, Prince Music Theatre. The Green Fairy Cabaret, September 8-10, Philadelphia School of Circus Arts. Lord of the Flies, September 2 and 7-9, Clark Park.

Cheese and Honey Festival (Weather Permitting)

I love festivals. I love cheese. I love craft beer. I love honey. I love gardens (...that somebody else grows and I can just enjoy). I love restaurants in unexpected spaces. If you too love all of these things, have I got good news for you: Terrain at Styer’s in Glen Mills is having a cheese and honey festival this Saturday from noon until 4:00 PM! (Weather permitting, I’m assuming.)

Should the event go on, it will feature “tastings of local cheese, honey and craft beer, plus theme activities like backyard beekeeping demonstrations and lessons on pairing and plating cheese. Guests can also sample dishes from Terrain’s summer cookbooks.” This is win-win-win-win, people. If you’re planning on attending, you’ll need the right shoes. First up: the bees!

The Picnic Ready by Poetic License is just perfect: black and yellow round toe pumps, honeycomb pattern on the fabric upper, a flower to attract the bees, and woven straw around its three-inch wedge. Adorable! Find them on Zappos for $98.

Next up: the garden. Aren’t they darling? The Floral Print Cross Strap Wedge by Bamboo have a deep pink rose print on ivory straps (or black, your choice), a 5.25-inch cork wedge and platform, and summer attitude written all over them. Find them on Amazon for under $24.

Next up: the beer.

Whether you like your beer light or dark, the Tossups Pump by Audrey Brooke have you covered! A four-inch heel, one-inch platform, round peep toe with pointed cutouts... delicious. Also available in black suede/black patent and ivory leather/black patent; yours from DSW for $70.

Next up: the honey.

Liquid gold! And look at the honeycomb pattern! The Ashton Wedge by Etienne Aigner has a man-made upper, cushioned footbed, and a 2.75-inch golden wedge. Also available in patent croc prints in black or brown; find them at Macy’s for $69.

And, er, just in case:

These rainboots by Ranger have little bees all over them! Let them buzz into your heart for $29 from QC Supply. But really, everyone stay safe and dry this weekend, and we'll reconvene on Tuesday, shall we?

Sales this weekend:
Aerosoles: Free shipping on $75 or more—no code required!
Macy’s: 10% off and free shipping with code SAVEMORE
Lord & Taylor: 15% off regular and sale items with promo code BIG
Bloomingdales: Free shipping on $99 or more—no code required!

Shoes and Spies and Tell No Lies

The National Constitution Center has two special exhibits right now: Discover the Real George Washington: New Views from Mount Vernon and Spies, Traitors, and Saboteurs: Fear and Freedom in America. Know what’s even better than two special exhibits for the price of one? Seeing them for $5 if you go on Thursdays between 5:00 and 8:00 PM, between now and September 1! Wooo!!

Ahem. So go, have a fabulous summer evening, and, of course, go in style. How about the buff and blue of George Washington’s Continental uniform?

Perfect! The Bellahh by Steve Madden have man-made uppers and insoles, and ankle strap with shiny buckle, and a 5.5-inch heel and a 1.5-inch contrasting color platform. Find them at Zappos for $104.

You know that whole wooden teeth thing? Not so! Washington’s dentures were made of real teeth held together in lead. Lead shoes are hard to find, though, so let’s stick with wood:

The Hugo XIII by Sole Boutique has a white faux leather upper and some serious timber—a 1.75 in platform to help you walk on the six-inch heel. (Six inches puts you up in Washington’s six-foot-three territory!) Find them on Karmaloop for $30.

There is, in fact, a pair of shoes in the Washington exhibit: booties of burgundy silk embroidered with gold thread with a dainty rhinestone buckle. (They’re copies of Martha’s, of course; not George’s!) How about an homage to Lady Washington? The A Girl’s Dream by Poetic License have a burgundy leather upper with fabric at the heel, a rhinestone feature at the peep toe, and a 3.25-inch stacked heel. Yours for just under $110 from Zappos.

The spies and sabotage exhibit opens with British troops burning Washington during the War of 1812 and Dolley Madison saving the portrait of George Washington from the White House. Okay, so Dolley wouldn’t have worn these, but they’re pretty evocative, aren’t they? The Glitter Flames Platform Pumps are gold glitter emblazoned with red rhinestones, with a 5.75 inch heel and a 1.75 inch hidden platform. You can find this hot little number at Amiclubwear for $135.

The exhibit continues through World War II, and attacks on American soil—German U-boats on the east coast and Japanese fire balloons on the west. Women of the time were wearing something like these:

The Sunstone Mary Jane Pumps by Xhilaration are gray patent leather with little cutouts around the toe and a 2.75-inch stacked heel—adorable. Find them at your local Target (also in black or brown) for $20.

Did you know Lucille Ball had an FBI file for being a suspected Commie? Ah, McCarthyism. Classic pink for our funny lady! The Rosette Pump by Audrey Brooke has a satin upper with rosette on the outside heel, a 4.5-inch heel with a half-inch hidden platform, and a padded insole. Also available in black, silver, or taupe from DSW; yours for $60.

Get thee to the National Constitution Center! Washington through September 5 and spies through September 11.

4th of July

Philadelphia: heart of American independence, home of American democracy, torch of America’s revolutionary spirit. (Oh, and birthplace of cheesesteaks.) If any city’s going to do the 4th of July right, it’s going to be us, so your shoes better impress on Philly’s big day! In fact, I’m posting this a few days early so you have some time to prepare. (I’m a firm believer in being appropriately dressed for holidays.)

These make me want to sign up with the USO; it’s ridiculous. The Marina by Leg Avenue have four-inch white heels, a blue striped upper, bits of red threaded through eyelets around the foot opening, and—oh yes—a big red bow on the peep toe with a white star on top. About $40 on Amazon; whole sizes only.

Like the stripes, but would rather have something, er, less overtly patriotic? A cork and braided rope wedge, bright blue and white stripes—the Bowtye by BP has summer written all over it! It has a four-inch heel with a one-inch platform, and has a striped fabric upper and a nice big bow at the toe. You’ll be wearing these all summer—but only if you get them from Nordstrom for $50.

How about flats? How cute are these? The Jelly D’Orsay by Missoni is a blue jelly flat with a red, white, and blue woven bow at its peep toe. It makes you want to shout “Hooray for 4th of July picnics! Pass me a hot dog!” Yours from Zappo’s for $198.

Enough with stripes. Bring on the stars!
The Star of Hope by Irregular Choice has a blue and white faux leather slingback upper with ankle strap, a fabric bow with strategically placed polka dots over its peep toe, and a stacked blue heel. Oh, and it’s covered in giant stars! Also available in black from Irregular Choice for $170.

If your 4th of July involves more running around (literally—badminton tourney, anyone? game of tag? potato sack race? water balloon fight?), how about this American classic?
The Converse Women’s One Star Oxfords are about as all-American as shoes can get. Rubber cap toe, contrast stitching, canvas upper... and they’re available in just about every color under the sun. Pick them up at your local Target for $30.

Okay, okay; you don’t want red, white, or blue. You’re still getting stars, missy!

The Star Gazing Sandal by Poetic License has a leather upper studded with stars (it closes with Velcro). And you know, I believe I count fifty stars on there! Perfect! It comes in taupe (shown), grey, and pink, and you can find them at DSW for $60.

But we still have to finish with the flag:

I pledge allegiance to the Lita by Jeffrey Campbell. It’s got everything: stars, stripes (I love how they go all the way to the ankle), a 5.5-inch heel and a 2-inch platform, and patriotism to spare! Yours from Karmaloop for $160.

Happy 4th of July, Philadelphia! Rock on!
