Longwood Lights

We all know that Longwood Gardens is beautiful during the day.  But through September, it’s also beautiful at night, thanks to light installations by Bruce Munro.  Just look at these photos—breathtaking.  Just breathtaking!  Inspired by color in the night, I give you black shoes with just a touch of surprising color:

Does the Sexy Platform Pump by Carlos by Carlos Santana remind anyone else of those scratch art things?  That’s what I think of when I look at them.  But these are even better: it’s glitter!  It has a five-inch heel, 1.5-inch platform, and is also available in a rosy gold color.  Find them at Macy’s for $110.

The Fame by J. Renee is the classic work pump with a twist: black patent leather with bright purple around the foot, down the three-inch heel, and making up a bow on the toe that just can’t contain itself!  Find them at Shoebuy for $56.

The Katie by Report is a classic black peep-toe flat (well, a half-inch heel), but it has a beautiful cluster of jewels at the toe!  Green, blue, purple, pink, orange... all held in a gold setting.  Elastic around the foot helps to keep it on—yours for $55 from Zappos.

The Masqraid is covered in tiny rhinestones, ready to reflect all of Bruce’s light sculptures.  A black upper, vibrant purple on the toebed and 5.25-inch heel, and turquoise on the outer part of the 1.5-inch platform.  You could wear this with so many things... if you agree, pick up a pair at Steve Madden on sale for $99.

The Jessie-1A by Miss Me is a lovely peep-toe wedge standing on a 4.5-inch heel and one-inch wedge wrapped in bright striped fabric!  It’s like the coolest macramé project ever—the art teacher you want to be wears these.  On sale for $39 at 6pm!

Lights by Bruce Munro runs through September 29.  There are extended evening hours from 6:00-9:00 PM Wednesdays through Sundays.  There are also a ton of special events: wine dinners, lectures, family activities...

Millions of Peaches...

Ah, the sweet tastes of summer.  Strawberries, melons... and don’t forget the peaches!  What’s summer without peaches?  Peddler’s Village knows this, and this weekend is their Peach Festival and Sidewalk Sale.  Peach treats, good shopping... you’ll be in for a nice afternoon.  And why not go in peachy shoes?

Peaches and cream!  The Pizzazz by Zigi Soho is a peep-toe with height to spare, on a six-inch striped wedge and a 2.25-inch platform.  (All the better to reach peaches on high branches!)  Also available in a really nice seafoam; find them at DSW for $80.

Feeling a little snaky?  The Mooz by Miss Me is a sweet little peach flat with gray and peach snake print on its almond-shaped toe.  And look at that double bow!  Love.  Also available in taupe, off-white, and black; yours for $30 on Endless.

The Kenley by Bebe is so sharp: white polka dots on peach fabric tied at the toe; and bright white 5.5-inch wedge and 1.5-inch platform.  The angles are really interesting on this—go check out the other photos at Macy’s.  Also available in nude; your choice on sale for $55.

The Troppic is like peach pudding!  An opaque, creamy peach jelly material makes up this sandal, and it has a perfect bow at the toe.  Also available in black or bright yellow; yours for $30 at Steve Madden.

The Wanda by Badgley Mischka is an unexpected little pump—the outside is tied together with a bow, tipped with rhinestone spheres!  It has an elegant 4.25-inch heel.  Also comes in white, black, gray, and what looks like a bluish-lavender; on sale for $108 from Bloomingdale's.

The Peach Festival is this Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 AM until 6:00 PM.  Feel like picking your own?  Head down to Linvilla Orchards—you can grab a bushel through mid-September.

Nutcracker Sweets

I have such a soft spot for The Nutcracker—the story is just so magical. Little girl gets doll, doll saves girl (and girl saves doll) from giant murderous mice, doll becomes handsome prince, and they spend a whole act in the most magical of courts, with dancing sweets and exotic cultures and beautiful ballerinas. Why can’t life be like that?! Next best thing—see a version of the show live. The Pennsylvania Ballet has their version, of course, and as a history nerd I have always been intrigued by the Rock Dance Project’s Nutcracker 1776. If you’re going, get in the spirit! Say, of the Chinese tea dance:
These strappy sandals come in either black and red or black and gold—I think the weaving at the toe is really nice. If you agree, they can be yours (whole sizes only!) for $52 from WildFree. Prefer the Russian candy cane dance? So festive! Red glitter, white stripes, a bow at the peep toe, four-inch heels—just be careful on those crazy stairs on the upper balconies of the Academy! These are worth it, though. Sizes 6-10 (whole sizes only) from Just for Costumes for $43. Or perhaps the Sugar Plum Fairy was always your favorite: So many lovely purples in the Sweet Ending by Poetic Licence—the satin laces, the leather upper with black lace overlay, the delicately patterned three-inch heel. These are real beauties. Also available in gray or green; yours for $88 from Zappos. You know who I always liked? The mice! You’d be Mouse Queen in these, baby! The Orpha15 Dark Grey Lady Fur Boots by Miss Me have a 4.25-inch heel, one-inch hidden platform, and a suede-like outer with fur details. Get a pair for $40 from Shoes19.com. If you’re lucky enough to be dancing in a version of The Nutcracker this season, I have it on good authority that these are the shoes you want to be dancing in: The pointe shoes from Gaynor Minden may look like your ordinary pointe shoe, but it’s what on the inside that counts. They are made of modern materials in their shanks and boxes, so they last longer than an ordinary pointe shoe (three to five times longer!). It has honest-to-goodness shock-absorbing material in the toe. (So squishy!) They have a beautiful performance arch. You don’t need to break them in. And they are super quiet—no more banging around on the boards! Yours for $98. The Pennsylvania Ballet’s version of The Nutcracker runs through New Year’s Eve. I’m afraid you’ve missed your chance at Nutcracker 1776 for this year, though, so be sure to put it in your calendar for next year.

Sales this weekend: Sorry ladies, I've been out for work and haven't been able to check. Good luck with your hunting!
