Dad-isms

This Sunday is Father’s Day.  Dads play an important role in our lives, and though they might all be different, all dads tend to say the same things, don’t they?

“Hey” is for horses.

The wedge on the Catskill by Jessica Simpson is covered in a basket weave that looks just like hay!  (Which is for horses.)  The straps are stretchy elastic and patent leather, and the inside of them and the sole of the shoe are covered in a fun print.  Also available in brown; your choice for $80 from Lord & Taylor.

I’m not sleeping; I was watching that channel!

Aww, I used to watch The Simpsons with my dad every week.  (Or he was mostly watching, when he wasn’t “resting his eyes.”  And snoring.)  This pair of wedges has the yellow family all over them, and yellow straps to match!  Find them on Etsy from seller Graceylou3 for $52.

Don’t worry; it’s just a little blood.

A little blood, dad?  A little blood?!  Even if it was only a tiny cut, it sort of felt like the Bloody-12 by Pleaser at times, didn’t it?  (Though hopefully if it was actually this bad, dad was driving you to the emergency room.)  Also available in white with splatter; your choice for $40 from Exotic High Heels.

Money doesn’t grow on trees.

Oh my god, I can’t believe these actually exist.  And they’re not even joke shoes!  They are real shoes by Sketchers that you can buy!  With Daddy’s money, of course… good thing these are named Daddy’s Money – Gimme Moolah.  (I am not even joking right now.  That is their actual name.)  Look at the dollar signs, the “Daddy’s $” on both sides (and the tongue too)… even the print on the inside is all about Daddy’s money.  It's also available in gray and white, and a pink, white and gray combo; your choice for $46 from 6pm.

Thanks for everything, dad.  Happy Father’s Day.

How to Outsmart a Zombie in Three Easy Shoes

This weekend, some friends and I are going to test our wits against a zombie.  That’s right: we’re willingly trapping ourselves in a locked room with a zombie, and we’ll only have an hour to find our way out.  The zombie's chained to the wall to start, but every five minutes the chains get let out another foot...

My fellow zombie-bait Christina asked me for some appropriate shoes.  Christina, here I give you (and all of you, should a zombie apocalypse ever actually occur) three ways to beat a zombie.

1.  Speed.

This is the easy one.  (Unless we have the unfortunate problem of a running zombie apocalypse instead of a shuffling zombie apocalypse, in which case I hope you’ve been training.)  I swear by my Asics, so here I give you their GEL-Kayano 20.  Responsive bounce back, multidirectional stretch mesh, a lightweight and supportive design… this will give you a fighting chance!  Available in a dozen other color combos as well; your choice for $160 from Lady Foot Locker.

2.  Weaponry.

Bang bang!  The Bondgirl by Pleaser is well stocked, with a gun-shaped 7.5-inch heel and ammo all around its ginormous platform.  Not enough ammo for you?  They come with detachable ankle straps, so you can load up as needed.  (Okay, so this isn’t really a gun.  BUT you could bash the zombie on the head with this and stand a fighting chance.)  Also available with silver bullets (…in case of werewolves?); your choice for $88 from Exotic High Heels.

3.  Camouflage.

If fighting and running aren’t your style, you could always try blending in.  Perhaps the undead will see the Zombie Stomper and think (can they think?), “Ugh.  She zombie.  Me no eat.”  And once you’ve lured it in with your sexy four-inch heel, stomp its brains, like the shoe’s name suggests.  Done!  Find them at Iron Fist for $45.

Wish us luck!  Hopefully I’ll be back next week…

Narberth Dickens Festival

This weekend is one of my favorite local festivals: the Narberth Dickens Festival!  It’s just all too cute: wandering carolers in Victorian dress, hot toddies in vintagey mugs, street vendors, horse and carriage rides, all sorts of activities…and of course, the characters from Dickens’ classic story wandering the streets, ready to warn you that you’ve been living your life in a dissolute way or what have you.

If you’re truly feeling in the spirit, here are some Victorian-esque shoes you might want to wear!  This one is the most authentic:

So authentic, in fact, that you’ll need a button hook in order to get them on!  Just like old times.  The Victorian Button Boots by Tavistock are made of calfskin, with two-inch French heels and calf sizes in two options (11 or 14.2 inches around).  Yours for $195 from American Duchess Historical Footwear—and while you’re there, look around!  If you’re a history nerd like me, you may geek out a bit.  (Why oh why are the red Kensington 18th Century Leather Shoes out of stock?!)

But if the button hook seems a bit much, just stick with laces:

This pretty brown pair of Calf High Victorian Boots by Pleaser have the same look for much less work.  (But still come work.  That’s a lot of laces.)  Also available in black or white; your choice for $44 from HowCool.

These bronze beauties are the Victoriana Knee High Boot from Hades.  A quilted upper, a line of buttons, a flamed buckle, silver trim, and a 2.5-inch French heel make this boot special.  And there’s a zipper on the inside—even easier than laces! Find them at Twisted Skyn for $165.

Okay, this last pair isn’t entirely historically accurate.  But it’s a little badass:

The Victorian Fur Boots by Fendi have the same silhouette of a classic Victorian boot (buttons and all) but they also have a line of fur and feathers!  So fun!  The outer is made of color-blocked brown, black, and white leather, and they have a squared off toe and a four-inch heel.  On sale for $868 from Shop.com!

Just make sure that whichever pair you choose, you can chase the book characters around Narberth.  (Actually, that signature scavenger hunt might only be for kids.  Screw that.  I want Bob Cratchit’s signature!  Bob!  Come back!)

Sales this weekend:
Bakers: Up to half off all boots
Bare Feet Shoes: 15% off $50, 20% off $75, and 30% off $100
Bus Stop Boutique: Party next Thursday from 6-9 PM!  Cocktails, 10% off, free gift wrapping on all purchases!
Macy's: 20-50% off select styles, plus 20% off with code GIFT
Steve Madden: 20% off $75 with code BUYMORE20; 25% off $100 with code BUYMORE25

Halloween

Darkness falls across the land.
The midnight hour is close at hand.
Creatures crawl in search of blood
To terrorize your neighborhood.

Blood found!  The Blood Splatter Zombie Pumps by Pleaser look like they’ve been through some horrible zombie attack, but hey—at least you came through the attack in style.  If now you’re destined to eat braaaaaaaaaaaains for the rest of your unnatural life, you may as well look good.  Also available with blood-on-white; your choice for $51 on Overstock.

And whosoever shall be found
Without the soul for getting down
Must stand and face the hounds of hell
And rot inside a corpse’s shell.

Hell, you’d look devilish in these!  The flame-shaped cuts around the heel, the pitchfork across the peep toe (there’s a little buckle on it, by the way)… I even love that the ankle strap is just tipped in black.  That just makes it for me!  Yours on super-sale for $30 from BuyCostumes.

The foulest stench is in the air—
The funk of forty thousand years—
And grisly ghouls from every tomb
Are closing in to seal your doom.

Think any grisly ghouls will emerge from the tombstones on the Wish List Plat Bootie by Iron Fist?  Maybe!  At least one of the stones has a frowny face on it—maybe he’s angry his eternal rest is being disturbed by all this dancing.  Kids these days.  I also enjoy the embossed crosses on the toe, by the laces, and around heel—that’s pulling a theme all the way through!  Very nice.  Whole sizes only from Shoes.com for $75.

And though you fight to stay alive
Your body starts to shiver
For no mere mortal can resist
The evil of the thriller!

AH HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!

AH HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!

Philadelphia Film Festival

Smell that?  It’s movie theater popcorn… and genius.

That’s right, the Philadelphia Film Festival is back!  It started yesterday and runs through next Sunday.  There are over a hundred films for you to choose from!  Like Grand Piano.  The bulk of the movie takes place over the course of a high stakes classical music concert. Here our hero (Elijah Wood) makes his long-awaited return to performing after being stricken with stage fright five years ago. Lured by the chance to honor his long-time instructor in a program showcasing his hardest works, the reluctant musician accepts, knowing it means tackling the infamous “unplayable piece.” The concert begins, but something strange is happening to his sheet music. As the pages are turned, text defines a very clear threat: “Play a wrong note and you die.”

I would not recommend playing the piano in these, but this pair of shoes by Charlotte Olympia is “grand” indeed!  The upper is meticulously stitched with piano keys, and ends at the toe in black suede.  (And a giant platform.  And a giant heel.  Don’t mess with these.)  Yours for $64 from Aliexpress.  (The price makes me think these aren’t actually Charlotte Olympia, whose shoes normally sell for several hundred dollars, but they’re still fun.)

Maybe you’d rather go historical—then how about Mary, Queen of Scots?  History fondly remembers Mary’s cousin, Elizabeth I of England, but many forget it was Mary who at one point laid claim to France, Scotland, and England and was arguably the most powerful person in the world. That moment was short-lived. The film follows her from her life in France and marriage to the King Francis II (and his untimely death one year later) to her return to Scotland. This is a rare, beautiful period drama that explores a deeper sense of the interior life of one of the more mysterious royal monarchs.

Okay, so these shoes by Annette are about 300 years later than the Renaissance, but they are fit for a queen!  Covered in pale ivory satin embellished with watercolor flowers, a sheer ruffle around the foot, a rhinestone buckle…you may be mistaken for royalty in these.  Find them at Buycostumes for $50.

If you’d rather go to the future instead, try The Congress.  Robin Wright receives an offer from Miramount Pictures for the rights to her essence. Although it means the company can digitally and chemically use her likeness in perpetuity, she takes the deal. Flash forward 20 years, and the corporate bullies now run things. Wright must travel through this brave new animated world, where hallucinatory experiences are sold over the counter, but the commodity of genuine identity or reality is rare indeed. The Congress is both a soulful, immersive psychological adventure and pure visual candy, like the tactile pleasures of old-school Looney Tunes-style animation on acid.

Trippy!  This shoe by Pleaser is not for everyday wear—at least today.  Maybe in the future!  This pair has multi-colored lights in its two-inch platform and tall heel, but there’s also an all-pink and all-blue version.  Your choice for $68 from Shoebuy.

These three movies are just the tiniest of samplings of what the Film Festival is showing.  Go and check out the others—I’m sure you won’t be disappointed in whichever you choose.

Grand Piano shows this Saturday at 9:45 PM and next Sunday at 10:00 PM.  Mary, Queen of Scots shows Saturday at 2:30 PM and next Sunday at 2:15 PM.  The Congress shows this afternoon at 4:00 PM and again on Sunday at noon.

Sales this weekend:

Sorry ladies; the Shoe Fairy is on vacation this week.  You’ll have to seek out the sales on your own!

Two Shoes in One

Convertible shoes fascinate me.  Are they wishful thinking?  Or do they fill a genuine need?  Feats of magical engineering to make a tall heel go to a short heel or a flat, while the body of the shoe is still comfortable no matter how you wear it?

Eh, who cares!  The idea is cool.  So nerd out with these convertible heels!

This pair by Day2Night is a classic patent leather round toe pump, except this one comes with two heels: a low one-inch heel or a high 3.75-inch heel.  Press a button on the underside to switch them out!  Yours for $149.

These are fun!  The Katharina by Tanya Heath are inspired by a corset, which you can see in the gold-tipped black laces woven through the gold trim up the front of the shoe.  Comes with two heels (1.7 inches and 3.3 inches), though you can also buy them individually in many heights and shapes!  The shoes run about $665, though, so I’m not sure how many extra heels you’ll want to buy…

I love a pointy toe with a bow, and the Nicia by Camileon has both!  It also has a 1.5-inch heel and a 3.25-inch heel, so you’re set for whatever you need!  Also available in brandy; yours for $119.

Okay, so these are awesome, convertibility or no.  In fact, the Ambi Iliad by Nael Coce aren’t convertible in the strict sense of the word—instead, it’s a shoe inside a shoe.  See the flats on the inside?  That’s what you pull out when you need a low shoe.  But it’s the outside that’s amazing; all glitter and spikes and four-inch stilettos.  Yours for $140.

These convertible shoes by Pleaser may stay the same heel height (4.5 inches, with a half-inch platform), but they look like two completely different shoes depending on whether you have the bootie upper on or not.  Black pump with a fancy buckle?  Lacey, tie-up boot?  You pick!  You get both for $60 (whole sizes only).

Hey, as women, it’s our prerogative to change our minds.  Now our shoes can keep up!

Seven Shoes (And One Poem) for Mom

Hundreds of stars in the pretty sky,

The Starla by Loeffler Randall is so beautiful... I can’t think of a more beautiful sandal!  It has a metallic gold leather upper, ties with a string dotted with glimmering stars, and is a little bit of celestial heaven on earth, wouldn’t you say?  It’s quite popular at Nordstrom (for $175), so if you’re not a 5.5, 6.5, 8, 10, or 10.5, you’re on the waiting list!

Hundreds of shells on the shore together,

So maybe these flip flops don’t have hundreds of shells, but there’s probably about 50—and starfish, too!  Since they’re from Café Press you can change the strap color from black to pink, blue, or orange; but any choice is still only $14.50!

Hundreds of birds that go singing by,

The Love Dove is gorgeous in shades of gold, black, and rose, with snakeskin straps (and slingback) and decorated with three beautiful birds.  It is one of those wonky heel-less heels, and is nearly six inches high, so watch out!  (It does have a two-inch platform, so that helps.)  Find them at Irregular Choice for $260.

Hundreds of lambs in the sunny weather.

Ahhh!  These lambie slippers are so cute!  But the cuteness isn’t the only thing that’s amazing: they are scented with lavender to relax you, AND they are microwavable, to make your toesies toasty warm!  Yours for $30 from BunnySlippers.com.

Hundreds of dewdrops to greet the dawn,

Just like dewdrops on a spring lawn, yes?  These round-toe beauties by Pleaser are just covered in rhinestones of different sizes (down the five-inch heel, too!).  Also available in white, gold, blue, and fuchsia; your choice for $187 on Amazon.  Whole sizes only.

Hundreds of bees in the purple clover,

I sort of love the Buzz-66 by Funtasma: the yellow and black stripes, the patent cap toe, the yellow-trimmed criss-cross straps, and I ADORE the little flower and bee at the 4.5-inch heel!  So cute!  Whole sizes only; yours for $40 from Costumes 4 Less.

Hundreds of butterflies on the lawn,

This is the glass slipper of wedges: a sky-blue jelly-type upper bedecked with a kaleidoscope of butterflies.  (Seriously, that’s what a group of butterflies is called.  Or is one of the options, anyway.)  It also comes in a deeper blue, a pink, or an unfortunate brown (brown?!); your choice for $69 from Light in the Box.

But only one mother the wide world over.

(Poem by George Cooper)

Happy Mother’s Day!

Shoe Makeup

Shoes are a bit of a phenomenon.  We know this.  But I was still a little surprised when I opened a magazine and saw this:

It’s blush!  With three colors in the shape of a shoe!  And with a little shoe charm on the side!  And Physicians Formula didn’t just put some pink powder in there and call it a day; it’s got subtle shimmer, the scent of vanilla, and, er, pheromone-mimicking ingredients so you’ll really be irresistible.

That got me thinking: what else is out there, shoe/makeup-wise?  Well, a makeup bag, for starters:

So cute!  A pair of pink stilettos and a small bouquet of lilies grace the side of this satin makeup bag.  It has a black zipper on the top and measures 7” by 4”, though it is Zazzle so it comes in about twenty different sizes.  This version, though, runs $26.

A makeup mirror:

The shoe in this image is made of scrollwork butterflies and flowers, and it accented with rhinestones.  (Always a plus.)  And it lights up!  It’s about 3” by 4”, has 8 LED lights in the top mirror, 5x magnification, and a velvet pouch for gifting or carrying.  Available from Unistylez for £13 (that’s about $20).

Something to hold your makeup brushes, of course:

I wish this shoe existed—it’s adorable!  This one, though, is angled to hold your makeup brushes in place.  It has a pink and black polka dot upper and heel, and the front is topped by a fabric bow with rhinestone detail!  Available from Jewelry Nanny for $18.

That pretty much has you covered!  But let’s finish with a shoe, just because:

Okay, these are amazing.  This pair by Pleaser may look like just another sexy lace-up platform shoe until you look at the heel, which (aside from being 5.5 inches high) is made of a bright red, rhinestone-bedecked plastic lipstick!  Amazing.  Yours for $62 from Amazon.

Shoes are gorgeous, but so are you, deputy shoe fairies, makeup or no!

PSF Turns Two!

Two years ago today, Philly Shoe Fairy’s first post went up.  If you had asked me then if I’d go two years I probably would have chuckled good-naturedly at you, but here I am!  Let there be much rejoicing!  And by rejoicing, I mean sparkles:

The Darcy by Touch Ups are glitter-tastic!  Silver glitter on the platform; silver glitter on the T-strap and ankle strap; and (of course) look at the rhinestones up the heel!  Fabulous.  Yours for $80 from Shoes.com.

The Show You by Enzo Angiolini is blue and beautiful!  Different-sized rhinestones cover the outside of this peep-toe pump, which has a 4.5-inch heel and one-inch platform.  Also available in black and dark purple, but the blue is too extraordinary.  On sale for $105 from Zappos.

The Rhinestone Perforated Slide Sandal by John Fashion is dazzling: sparkling fabric, oodles of rhinestones… and look at the interesting heel!  Also available in black, gold, and silver in addition to this gray; your choice for between $45 and $66 from Amazon.

The Berne by Sole Obsession is like sherbet for your feet!  Bright pink on the upper and slingback; cheery blue on the exterior part of the 1.75-inch platform; and blush on the 5.5-inch heel.  Also available in off-white and champagne (which is really lovely!); yours for $90 from DSW.

Oh.  My.  God.  The Fantasia 2020 by Pleaser is made of intricately cut suede (flowers! delicate lines!), the suede is covered with rhinestones, and then satin ribbon ties it all up at the top.  It has a 5.5-inch heel, but a 1.5-inch platform, so really it only feels like four inches.  (Which I guess is still a lot.  But come on, this boot is worth it.)  Also available in black, but it doesn’t compare to the blush!  Find them at Shoebuy for $306.

So let there be sparkles, and happy birthday to PSF!

Mrs. Claus at Home

Santa has done his annual trip, bringing presents to good little boys and girls around the world.  Makes you wonder, though, what Mrs. Claus is up to while her hubby is circling the globe.  Is she at home relaxing in front of the fire?

Naughty or nice?  How about a foot in both worlds?  These red velvet slippers are edged with white fur, trimmed with silver sequins, and jingle bells too!  Yours for $15 from Crazy for Bargains.

Out walking around the North Pole, enjoying the Northern Lights?

The Sequin Slipper Boots by Lamo are perfect for the indoors or the outdoors: a white faux fur lining, a soft suede outer, and a ton of festive red sequins!  Love love love.  Find them at Hayneedle for $75.

Heck no!  She’s out with the girls, of course!

This hot little number from Pleaser is the Mrs. Claus boot to end all Mrs. Claus boots.  Red patent leather, a rhinestone buckle, white faux fur and a red satin bow… they scream, “Buy me another gingerbread martini, Blitzen!”  Find them on Overstock for $62.

Whatever you’re doing this Christmas, I know you’re being your fabulous selves!  Have a merry one!

Iceberg, right ahead!

This Sunday, it will have been a hundred years exactly since the RMS Titanic, perhaps the most luxurious ship ever to sail, hit an iceberg and sank in the icy waters of the north Atlantic.  It was designed to be the height of opulence and extravagance, and it counted among its passengers some of the wealthiest and most prominent people of the day (including a fashion designer!).

Needless to say, there was mucho haute couture aboard.  If you had been a passenger, you may have seen shoes like this aboard:

Well, not quite like this, but brocade was popular for shoes, and the Rock Candy by MIA certainly has brocade!  Purple floral brocade, a strappy front, and a 2.75-inch heel—not to mention the iridescent jewel at the toe!  Perfect for a meal in the Titanic’s Café Parisienne.  Find them on Amazon for $60 in sizes 6.5-8.5; also available in blue in size 8.5.

The Thoroughbred by BC Footwear looks a lot like Titanic footwear, actually!  A low heel, lots of straps... you’d be right at home at the Verandah Café.  Available in pewter and black in addition to the gray; yours for $55 from Zappos.

Victorian-style boots were still popular, even though we’re in the Edwardian era—and while the heel on the Splendor by Pleaser may be a little too high for the time (four inches, with a .75-inch platform), the black and white looks pretty similar to the real thing!  Pick up yours from A Costume House for $49—whole sizes only!

Looking to commemorate the centennial of the Titanic?  There’s a boatload (ha!) of choices to choose from.  Hungry?  Head over to Gilmore’s in West Chester on April 29 or May 6 for a dinner based on the first class menu from April 12, 1912.  Blackfish Restaurant in Conshohocken has one on Sunday too, and the Glen Foerd Mansion gives you the choice of first class or steerage and encourages you to come in costume!

If tours are more your style, visit the Independence Seaport Museum for a new exhibit looking at Philadelphians who were on board the ship, and watch A Night to Remember in their theater all day Saturday.  There’s an exhibit at Widener University too!  Wideners were on the ship, you know—George and Harry Widener were lost.  Harry’s death profoundly affected A. S. W. Rosenbach, and their relationship is examined in a new exhibit at the Rosenbach Museum.   On May 12, join Laurel Hill Cemetery for a tour of the final resting places of several Titanic survivors, then enjoy a dinner based on the last meal aboard.

Perhaps film?  Of course Titanic is back in theaters, but the Free Library looks at the famous ship in film on April 25.

Oh, and not only is it 100 years since the Titanic sank, this is Philly Shoe Fairy’s 100th post!  Coincidence?  Or fate? J

Fresh Ink

In case you haven’t caught any of the eight thousand tattoo shows on TV lately, ink is making a major comeback.  In fact, the Philadelphia Seaport Museum has a new exhibit featuring both contemporary designs and their historical context.  Not quite brave enough to go in for the real thing?  Here are some tattoos you can take off at the end of the day.

So many classic tattoo images on the Teeze by Pleaser: skulls, birds, roses, anchors, winged hearts with “Love” banners...  The ribbon seals the deal for me over that little keyhole—so cute!  Find them on Endless for $80.

The Dayna by Ellie is rockabilly to the max!  A leopard-print T-strap upper, and a cork wedge with tattoo imagery all over its 4.25-inch wedge and 1.75-inch platform—I love that little swallow near the toe!  Whole sizes only; find them at Sears for about $34 (and hey, free shipping!).

Or you could just go full country in these:

The Anteater Print Boots by Ariat have a decoratively cut brown leather toe and a cream suede shaft screen-printed with tattoos!  Even the top edge of the boot is scalloped—I love all the detailing.  These beauties can be yours for $140 from Drysdales.
The Sashaa by Betsy Johnson are a cheery yellow flat (also available in turquoise) covered in tattoo imagery all the way to its metallic toe cap.  So cute!  Find them at Shoes.com for about $66.

And for the sassy bride:

Yes, those say “Till Death Do Us Part”!  Imagine your guests’ faces when you kneel during the ceremony—hilarious.  Etsy seller taylorsays does custom work as well, so if you can dream it, she can do it.  These sky-high beauties (almost six inches tall!) will run you $240.

Past to Present: Tattoo Paintings runs until May 20.  Inspired by what you see?  Go aboard the warship USS Olympia (part of the museum) and get inked at the Mighty Warship Olympia Tattoo Festival II, running from June 1-3!  How awesome would that be, getting tattooed aboard a ship that served in the Spanish-American War?  Come on, that’s awesome.
