PSF Turns Two!

Two years ago today, Philly Shoe Fairy’s first post went up.  If you had asked me then if I’d go two years I probably would have chuckled good-naturedly at you, but here I am!  Let there be much rejoicing!  And by rejoicing, I mean sparkles:

The Show You by Enzo Angiolini is blue and beautiful!  Different-sized rhinestones cover the outside of this peep-toe pump, which has a 4.5-inch heel and one-inch platform.  Also available in black and dark purple, but the blue is too extraordinary.  On sale for $105 from Zappos.

The Rhinestone Perforated Slide Sandal by John Fashion is dazzling: sparkling fabric, oodles of rhinestones… and look at the interesting heel!  Also available in black, gold, and silver in addition to this gray; your choice for between $45 and $66 from Amazon.

The Berne by Sole Obsession is like sherbet for your feet!  Bright pink on the upper and slingback; cheery blue on the exterior part of the 1.75-inch platform; and blush on the 5.5-inch heel.  Also available in off-white and champagne (which is really lovely!); yours for $90 from DSW.

Oh.  My.  God.  The Fantasia 2020 by Pleaser is made of intricately cut suede (flowers! delicate lines!), the suede is covered with rhinestones, and then satin ribbon ties it all up at the top.  It has a 5.5-inch heel, but a 1.5-inch platform, so really it only feels like four inches.  (Which I guess is still a lot.  But come on, this boot is worth it.)  Also available in black, but it doesn’t compare to the blush!  Find them at Shoebuy for $306.

I’m home on a sick day, I’m afraid, so pardon the short post. Today for me it’s just orange juice...

It's the End of the World as We Know It!

If you’re reading this, it means the world hasn’t ended quite yet.  What’s that?  Surely you know the ancient Mayans said that the world would end on December 21, 2012!  (Actually, they didn’t, and they even created another calendar that gives us 7,000 more years, but where’s the fun in that?) 

What sort of shoes might the Mayans have worn while carving their beautifully ornate calendar?  According to the Fashion Encyclopedia, “Mayan, Aztec, and Inca royalty and soldiers wore various styles of sandals. Typically these sandals were made of leather from a goat, llama, or sheep, or from plant fibers and tied to the foot with leather or woven fabric straps.  As with other garments worn by these cultures, the decoration of footwear indicated a person’s social status. The wealthiest members of society could wear sandals dyed bright colors and adorned with beads of gold or silver.”

So… fabulous leather sandals!  Leather can be a bit pricey, but hey, it’s the end of the world!  You can’t take it with you, right?

The Pressto by Steve Madden fits the bill, all right!  Brightly colored leather is intricately braided to make straps up the front, over the foot, and around the ankle.  It’s finished with brown leather and a zipper at the back.  Also available in solid coral leather; your choice from Zappos for $48.

Firebird Festival

Looking for something to do this weekend?  One of my favorite local festivals is going on: the Phoenixville Firebird Festival!  What’s not to love about a day of dance, music, art, and parades, followed by the burning of a three-story wooden bird in honor of the town’s name?  As one of my friends would say, that’s just awesomesauce.

In honor of the awesomeness, I give you shoes that sparkle and swirl like flames in the night!

The Arden by Promiscuous has so much going on—the rhinestones, of course, but also the curving shape of the upper, and the unusual heel.  See it on the back shoe in the picture, the cutout?  The bottom zigs all the way back in to meet the ball of the foot.  It’s nuts.  It’s got a six-inch heel and 1.75-inch platform, and is available in black or red from Zappos for $81.

I love the upper on the Sublime by Two Lips—it really evokes the feeling of the phoenix’s wings, doesn’t it?  It’s studded with gunmetal rhinestones on the upper and on the 4.25-inch heel, and a zipper up the back lets you in.  Available in black or red; your choice for $63 from 6pm.

The Fern by Nina has a glitter fabric d’Orsay upper, slender 3.25-inch heel, peep toe, and an air of simple elegance.  Also available in black, bronze, grape (which is KICKIN’, by the way), navy, and pewter—your choice from Shoes.com for $79.

The Beccalyn by Enzo Angiolini are fabulous for so many reasons.  One, the rhinestones all over the 1.5-inch platform.  Two, the rhinestones all over the 4.5-inch heel.  Three, the swirly shape of the rhinestones up the back, like sparks swirling up from the phoenix aflame.  And four, THERE ARE RHINESTONES ON THE SOLE.  Rhinestones on the sole!!  I’m in love.  If you agree, pick up a pair in red, dark pink, or dark purple for $120 from 6pm.

Visions of Arcadia

This is your last week to see the current special exhibition at the art museum—Visions of Arcadia.  It’s a collection of paintings embodying the idea of “Arcadia,” a mystical earthly paradise of contentment and harmony.  (Sounds nice, right?  If only.)  Here are the three masterpieces being showcased in the exhibit, and some shoes inspired by them!

The first is Paul Gauguin’s Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?

All the tropical beauty Gauguin is known for, paired with imagery symbolizing the journey through life.  (This one's really cool; Google it to see it larger.  You won't regret the 10 seconds!)

  

I love these!  The Patent Leather Color Block Sandal by Sergio Rossi pulls in both the yellow and the blue of Gauguin’s painting, and in an unexpected way.  It’s mostly blue patent leather (on the 4.5-inch heel and 1.5-inch platform—yowza!), but it has intricate yellow detailing on the toe—much like the twists and turns of life, eh?  They will set you back $300, but hey, they’re on sale from $800!  You’re in luck if you’re a 6; find them at DSW.

The second piece is Matisse’s Bathers by a River:

It took Matisse eight years to finish this giant masterpiece, and he himself described it as one of his most pivotal works.

I like how the blocky shape of the Haven’t Got a Worry by Seychelles mimics the cubism of Matisse’s figures, plus the lime green color matches the blades of grass!  It’s on a five-inch stacked heel and 1.75-inch platform, and it’s also available in black, gray, or a really lovely caramel brown if you’re not into the green.  Find them on Endless for $55.

And the final piece?  The PMA’s own The Large Bathers, by Cézanne:

Cézanne wanted to craft a piece that was timeless.  I’m sure he’d be pleased.

The Popculture by Enzo Angiolini is a classic seen in a new way, just like Cézanne’s painting.  This blue suede pointed toe pump has a four-inch heel and zipper features around the toe and heel.  Also available in black leather or a really cool purple suede; your choice for $110 from Macy’s.

New Year's Eve

It’s almost here—2012!  Should old acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind?  Should old acquaintance be forgot, and old lang syne?  For auld lang syne, my dear, for auld lang syne, we’ll take a cup of kindness yet, for auld lang syne!

The Kendra by Libby Edelman have a glitter body, giant satin bow on the peep toe, and are just all-around adorable!  Available in six other options (glitter and/or animal print) from Zappos for $56.

I love the Slendor by Enzo Angiolini—like liquid satin pouring down your feet.  And look at the glitter on the one-inch platform!  Also has a 4.5-inch heel and a zipper up the back, and is available in black too—just head to your local Macy’s and pick up a pair for $130.

The Alexa by Betsey Johnson has a five-inch heel, 1.75-inch platform, lots of gold glitter, and an awesome little bow on the back.  (And the bottom is leopard print, in true Betsey style!)  Also available in black, $90 from DSW.
