Oscar Night

The glamour, the jewels, the hair, the makeup… must be time for the Oscars!  Film’s biggest night is this Sunday, and you can be sure the starlets will be decked out to the nines.  (Maybe even the tens.)  Drool alert.  And even if you can’t see them under the sweeping hemlines, you know every woman is in an extraordinary pair of shoes.  Maybe something like these pairs of couture beauties I give you today!

The Cassiane by B Brian Atwood is a cascade of loveliness: gold metallic snake at the toe and up around the ankle, delicate gold chains down the front of the foot, a five-inch heel and a one-inch contrast platform.  A zipper up the back lets you in; find them at Shopbop for $425.

Oh god, they’re like FabergĂ© eggs you can wear on your feet!  The Jeweled Ankle-Wrap Platform Sandals by Rene Caovilla are blue suede sandals (trimmed with gold leather on the one-inch platform) with an elaborately jeweled crisscross up the front of the foot: blue and orange and green and red and purple, all in gold.  It also has a five-inch heel, but check out the sole—covered in silver glitter; Caovilla’s trademark.  Pick up a pair for $1365 at Neiman Marcus.

The Leaf-Embellished Wedge Sandals by Giuseppe Zanotti are so sculptural, with the gold leaves floating up the front on straps of black patent leather.  (And see those two buckles at the ankles?  Love!)  The body of the shoe is black suede, and while it is one of those heel-less heels, it looks more like a wedge (a 5.25-inch wedge, with a one-inch platform).  Yours for $1695 from Saks

The W12A313292-24 by Dsquared2 is too amazing for words: a body covered in silver glitter, a pointed toe, a 4.25-inch heel, and a chain of rhinestones from a handful of rhinestone flowers on the toe across the foot and up the outside.  To.  Die.  For.  Yours for $718 from Zappos Couture.

So grab some popcorn and settle in for a night of beautiful fashion—head to toe!

It's the End of the World as We Know It!

If you’re reading this, it means the world hasn’t ended quite yet.  What’s that?  Surely you know the ancient Mayans said that the world would end on December 21, 2012!  (Actually, they didn’t, and they even created another calendar that gives us 7,000 more years, but where’s the fun in that?)

What sort of shoes might the Mayans have worn while carving their beautifully ornate calendar?  According to the Fashion Encyclopedia, “Mayan, Aztec, and Inca royalty and soldiers wore various styles of sandals. Typically these sandals were made of leather from a goat, llama, or sheep, or from plant fibers and tied to the foot with leather or woven fabric straps.  As with other garments worn by these cultures, the decoration of footwear indicated a person’s social status. The wealthiest members of society could wear sandals dyed bright colors and adorned with beads of gold or silver.”

So… fabulous leather sandals!  Leather can be a bit pricey, but hey, it’s the end of the world!  You can’t take it with you, right?
The Pressto by Steve Madden fits the bill, all right!  Brightly colored leather is intricately braided to make straps up the front, over the foot, and around the ankle.  It’s finished with brown leather and a zipper at the back.  Also available in solid coral leather; your choice from Zappos for $48.

The Topaza by Enzo Angiolini is a sweet pewter number, with a leather and synthetic upper (love the snakeskin on the swirly straps about the ankles!).  Also available in a lovely bronze; your choice for $54 from Shoebuy.

The crocheted pom poms on the S12C322016 by DSQUARED sort of remind me of the pom poms on a sombrero, don’t they?  It has a multicolored woven leather upper, 5.5-inch stacked heel, 1.75-inch tiered platform (love the zig zags!), and leather insole and lining.  Find them at 6pm for $502.

Love!  The Unico by Nine West has a suede upper decked out with cutwork, embroidery, and rhinestones.  Too gorgeous!  It has a half-inch stacked heel and comes in your choice of gold, black, or a dark teal.  Yours for $70 from Macy’s.

The 307923VBAO0 by Bottega Veneta look like carved, beautifully stained wooden sculptures, don’t they?  But they’re leather!  Look at all the cutout detailing and stitching… they practically glow.  Yours from Zappos for $1350.

Hopefully the world won’t end and I’ll see you all right back here on Tuesday, but if not… well, at least you’ll have gone out in style, right?
