Go Red For Women

Take look around today, and you may notice a higher-than-usual occurrence of women wearing red.  That’s because today is National Wear Red Day, sponsored by Go Red For Women and the American Heart Association.  Its purpose is to raise awareness of heart disease in women.  Not to frighten you, but 1 in 3 women (that’s fully a third of us) will die of heart disease or stroke.  The good news is it’s 80% preventable, so take some time today to learn a little about heart disease.

Here are some red shoes that fit the bill today:

The Milena by Michael Antonio is a red faux suede bootie with lines so sleek I can barely stand it.  It has an almond toe, 4.5-inch heel, one-inch platform, and a zipper on the inside to let you in.  Also available in tan, black, and a pretty rockin’ blue; your choice for $30 at DSW.

The Britt Lace Ballet Flats are sweet round-toe flats adorned in that most ladylike of fabrics, lace.  It also has leather trim and soles, memory foam footbeds, and a half-inch heel.  Available in black lace too; find them at Talbots for $40.

Put a little python in your life with the Lory by Jessica Simpson.  This pointed-toe pump is a classic, and would work for the office or evening with its three-inch heel.  Also available in black suede, gold metallic, and black and white zebra snake; each is $80 from Macy’s.

Okay, so these FlexFlops aren’t red, but they do come from the American Heart Association store, so a portion of your purchase will help support the cause.  Plus they fold up into that adorable pouch studded with red stones, so you can take them anywhere!  Yours for $24.

So take a little time today and learn about heart disease in women.  It may be one of the smartest decisions you make.

Happy Shoe Year!

Happy New Year, deputy shoe fairies!  I love the bright, shiny, fresh new start that the New Year brings.  You know what else it brings?  A new color of the year!  For 2014, I present the glorious pinky purple that is Pantone’s Radiant Orchid:

Love.  So here you go!  Deck yourself in the color of the New Year!

The Azelle is a little on the purple side, maybe, but it’s so fun!  I love the crystals all over it; I love the swirling cut of the vamp… I want to wear this to every party.  It has a 4.5-inch heel and a small platform underneath the peep toe, and is also available in black, but…black?  Come on.  Radiant Orchid.  Your choice for $60 from Nine West.

This shiny orchid beauty is the Laetitia by B Brian Atwood.  It’s a metallic snake!  Come on, that’s awesome.  Can I also say how I love the heel?  I love the shape it makes where it joins the shoe, and I really like the contrast of the black.  (That heel is 4.5 inches, by the way.)  The double ankle strap is a bit unusual!  Cool feature.  Find them at 6pm for $209.

Glitter flats! This pair by Pompili may be simple in silhouette, but not in materials: orchid glitter on the outside, trimmed in shiny orchid fabric and topped with a shiny orchid bow.  And silver on the inside, too!  These are all kind of fun.  Pick up a pair at Lyst for $45.

The Louie by Michael Antonio is an almond-toe pump with a body of orchid faux suede and a toe cap of black faux leather.  Classic and fun at the same time—not to mention on-trend!  The heel is 4.5 inches high, and there’s a hidden half-inch platform… and it comes in a ton of other colors!  Seriously, there are eight other choices.  (The black and yellow sort of reminds me of The Bride’s jumpsuit from Kill Bill.  But I digress.)  Your choice for $50 from Heels.com.

Oh god, I think I’m having a shoegasm.  The Embellished High Heel Ankle Tie Sandal by Rene Caovilla is magnificent beyond words.  Sure, the toe strap is simple, but the ankle… the ankle!  Rhinestones in blue and gold and purple (er, orchid), and the sole is all silver glitter!  If I could wear one pair of shoes for the rest of my life, it might be these.  They’re not out yet, but you can preorder them from Neiman Marcus for $1695.

This color makes me so happy.  I hope it brings you happiness in 2014 too!

Sales this weekend:
Sorry ladies; still on vacation!  Be back next week.

Léger at the PMA

Between now and January 5, head over to the Philadelphia Museum of Art for their new exhibit, Léger: Modern Art and the Metropolis.  This interdisciplinary exhibition will shed new light on the vitally experimental decade of the 1920s in Paris when the great French modernist Fernand Léger played a leading role in redefining the practice of painting by bringing it into active engagement with the urban environment and modern mass media.

The starring piece of the exhibit is Léger’s monumental painting The City from 1919, a cornerstone of the PMA’s collection and a landmark in the history of modern art.  Here it is!

It feels like a city, doesn’t it?  Wash hanging from the line.  Pedestrians.  Signboards.  Electricity.  Life!

This chunky sandal has so much going on—a bright yellow 1.77-inch platform, blue and beige patent leather up the front of the foot, and that heel!  Look at that crazy heel.  It’s fabulous, in a weird sort of way.  If you agree, you can pick it up at Light in the Box for $100.

But Léger isn’t the only artist on display.  He’s accompanied by other artists also exploring the complexity and excitement of the metropolis.  Artists like Piet Mondrian, and his No. IV / Composition No. II:

Mondrian, of course, is recognized the world over for his color-blocking.  Like these shoes!

The Nanette by Calvin Klein is Mondrian in a shoe, if ever I saw it!  Its mixed-leather upper is blocked in red, white, and beige, with a four-inch heel in black.  Block-tastic!  Yours for $413 on Zappos (on sale from $825!).

Another featured artist is Gerald Murphy.  This is his Razor:

I sort of love this painting—the clean lines, the subtle crosshatching on the razor, the old-timey fountain pen.

The Kambria by Michael Antonio has a delicately masculine shape, with the clean lines of Murphy’s painting.  The silver and black are so striking, don’t you think?  It’s got a killer five-inch heel (though at least it’s not skinny!) and a one-inch platform to help you out with the, you know, walking.  Find them at Heels.com for $75.

Feeling inspired?  I know I am!  So head on over to the PMA and enjoy some Léger (and friends)!

The Magic Flute

Among the many things I love (the Olympics, Valentine’s Day, and, er, this whole list here), I also love opera, and tonight is opening night for Opera Philadelphia’s production of Mozart’s The Magic FluteThe Magic Flute invites us into a land of enchantment, full of queens and princesses, evil sorcerers, heroic princes, mythical creatures, and unpredictable, epic adventures.

Needless to say, the costumes are fantastic.  There’s a giraffe:

Please also add giraffes to the list of things I love.  I love giraffes.  I also love the Chuck Taylor Sequins Ox Sneaker by Converse: it’s got giraffe, of course, but it’s also covered in clear sequins so it’ll sparkle in the light!  Yours for $90 from Nordstrom.

A dragon:

The Leland by Michael Antonio has dragon written all over it: scales, spikes… even the red is evocative of a dragon breathing fire, isn’t it?  It has a five-inch heel (and a hidden platform so it doesn’t feel quite that tall), and is also available in a cool blue.  Your choice for $40 from 6pm.

The Queen of the Night:

Fit for a queen indeed!  The Suede Wedge Pump by Giuseppe Zanotti is so much more than just a suede wedge: it’s covered in multicolored rhinestone stars!  Blue, purple, orange, green… a galaxy of sparkle and color.  (Stars are WAY more than just white, people!)  It has a peep toe, 4.5-inch wedge and half-inch platform, and ankle strap, and can be found at DSW for $800.

And a man covered by the feathers of exotic birds:

The bright blue of the Adore by David Tutera makes me so happy!  (Though it’s also available in a pale pink, if the blue is too much for you.)  It has a beautiful satin upper, ankle strap (with touch of tan at the buckle there), five-inch heel, one-inch platform… and of course the feathers across the peep toe!  They just feel like spring, and they can be yours for $145 from Zappos.

If you’ve never been to an opera, why not give The Magic Flute a try?  Performances run through next weekend, so treat yourself to an evening of spectacle and spectacular music.  Who knows?  You may love opera too!

Don't forget!  Philly Shoe Fairy's second birthday party is next weekend!  The DSW in King of Prussia is opening early just for us.  Raffles, food, fun... and SHOES!  It'll be fabulous.

Sales this weekend:

Restaurant Week

Mmm, hope you’re hungry: it’s time for Restaurant Week!  Restaurant Week is that magical time of year when you can enjoy some of the city’s hottest restaurants without breaking the bank.  Three courses might usually run you, what, $50?  More?  Not during Restaurant Week!  All dinners are $35 (and lunch is even cheaper, at $20), which is good, because once you start looking at menus you won’t want to stop.

Take Jamonera: start with some Spanish olives, then dig into smoked bacon-wrapped medjool dates, roasted pork shoulder and crispy pork belly with an orange-sherry glaze, and hazelnut bread pudding:

Classy, warm, sophisticated: just like the beautiful red and brown interior of Jamonera.  The Justine by Boutique 9 has a pointed toe, a killer 4.5-inch heel, and a metallic faux croc upper that just glows.  Also available in black or blue; your choice from Macy’s for $98.

Feeling more Caribbean?  Head over to Cuba Libre for guava BBQ ribs, arroz con pollo, and some tres leches de caramel:

Tropic-tastic!  The Koula by Michael Antonio has a bright abstract floral print upper, 5.25-inch heel, one-inch platform, peep toe, and yellow faux suede ties around the ankle.  They’re a DSW online exclusive, and are on sale!  $30 instead of $65!

How about Zahav?  They’ve got hummus, haloumi, kofte, and pistachio cake:

The Got the Hump by Dan Sullivan has a camel on it!  A legit camel, with two humps and a green and pink…saddle?... and a pink tassel at the head.  There’s a six-inch cork wedge behind the camel, by the way, and a two-inch platform under the peep-toe pump-style upper.  Also available in a green print, as well as sort of a metallic snake bootie that just happens to have a camel on it—the pumps will run you $350 at Irregular Choice.

Maybe a spring roll, Chilean sea bass, and cheesecake at Bleu Martini

The Sammy by Gabriella Rocha is a blue suede shoe (sing it, Elvis baby) with a pointed toe and small silver spikes across the heel.  Also available in taupe (with gunmetal), red (with gold), and black (with gold); all $39 from Zappos.

Restaurant Week runs through February 1.  Some restaurants offer their special menus on Saturdays and some don’t, but you’ve got the other nights too.  Go!  Dine!  Enjoy!

Trend: Cap Toes

They’re everywhere: cap toes!  I love cap toes; they’re professional but unexpected at the same time, and they’re on absolutely everything right now.  Just look at these booties:
How I love them!  The Moxby by Michael Antonio are booties in wine faux leather, with a round cap toe of black patent leather.  They have a three-quarter-inch platform, 4.5-inch heel, and a zipper up the back to let you in.  Also available in black/black patent and nude/nude patent (both lovely in their own ways); your choice for $59 from Shoes.com.

The Shelby by Violet & Red has so many interesting details: the patent cap toe, of course, but also the patent bow at the toe, and the lace fabric of the upper!  Perfect for work, under jeans, just doing errands, going out... is there anything this little flat can’t do?  Find them at DSW for $60.

Don’t you love the green on the Viveca by Mossimo?  It’s such a breath of fresh air.  (Though it comes in a beautiful blue or purple as well!)  They have a four-inch heel and a pointed cap toe of shiny silver patent, and can be yours for $28 from Target.

Glitter!  Shiny!  Love!  The Sophie by Romantic Soles are soft and spectacular at the same time: a patent gold upper, capped at its pointed toe with gold glitter.  It does have a three-quarter-inch heel to lift you just a little, and comes in all silver, black with silver, and a cool brown with tortoise combo as well.  All $59 on Zappos!

Wowza!  The Eryn by Kelsi Dagger is one sexy cap toe.  A black body is trimmed with leopard at the heel and on the ankle strap, and is finished with a lipstick-red cap at the pointed toe.  It balances on a 4.5-inch heel and can be found at Karmaloop for $112.

With so many options, you’re sure to find a cap toe that tickles your fancy!

Spring has Sprung!

Today is the first day of spring!  Of course, it’s felt like spring for quite some time, what with the seventy-degree temperatures, blooming daffodils, leaves on the trees... it’s not supposed to be this warm until May, people!  Not that I’m complaining, mind you.  And we’re due for more days of glorious weather.  Enjoy them in shoes like these!

It’s like a dish of fruity sorbet!  The Savanna by J. Renee has a 3.25-inch metallic heel, trio of sunny colors, and a slingback.  Find them at Zappos for $90.

These strappy beauties are made of green faux leather with straps in blue, white, green, red, and yellow.  They have around a three-inch heel with a slight platform—these would be beautiful with a flowy white sundress and some chunky jewelry in one of these colors!  Also available in a red mix and all beige; find them at Light in the Box for $30.

Bright and beautiful!  The Evangela by Jessica Simpson has suede leather upper with patent leather detailing, a 5.25-inch heel, 1.5-inch platform, and sass to spare.  I love the contrast buckle at the ankle—it really brightens it up!  Also available in cheetah or a very nice blue and green combo; find them at Zappos for $98.
The Granville by Michael Antonio are a vision in blue!  Straps galore, a happy blue color, a five-inch wedge with a 1.5-inch platform... and I love the print on the insole!  Also available in brown and yellow; pick up yours from DSW for $45.

And what would this be without a shoe from Call it Spring?  It’s got “spring” right in the name!

The Coatley is a pink jelly sandal!  With rhinestones!  And a bow!  CUTE OVERLOAD!  Also available in black and clear, but...why, when there’s pink?!  Ahem, excuse me; got a little carried away there.  But for $20, these are an absolute steal!

So sneak outside if you can, go get some ice cream or frozen yogurt or something, enjoy the blooming trees and flowers (and, er, try not to die from pollen inhalation), and just revel in the new season.  Yay spring!

I'm back from Orlando in one piece!  Just because I was away doesn't mean I wasn't thinking of you, Deputy Shoe Fairies, or of shoes-- check out the Mickey Mouse ears I picked up at Disney!  They have a shoe on them!

Some...day...my prince...will come.... la, la, da dee, da dum...

Hanukkah 2011

Tonight is the first night of Hanukkah!  Time for candles, dreidels, gelt, and my personal favorite: latkes!  (How I love latkes.  Some year I will get to Latkepalooza.)  In honor of the holiday, here are eight shoes for the eight nights of the Festival of Lights.

Third, bright pink for the plastic dreidel I always picked out in middle school from the bowl of dreidels during our multi-cultural holiday celebration:

(It should not surprise you that I always picked the pink ones.  I believe I still may have one somewhere.)  The Partyy-R is fuchsia satin with a jewelled five-inch heel, one-inch platform, and girly attitude to spare!  Also available in black, champagne, and a really lovely blue from Steve Madden for $130.

Seventh, white for the snow of a winter holiday:

The ToeTied by Beverly Feldman is as pretty as a present—it even has a rhinestone bow on the toe!  It has a 4.75-inch heel, half-inch platform, satin upper, and leather sole.  Find them at DSW for $150.

And eighth, red for the love of your family and friends:

Happy Hanukkah, my Jewish friends!  Happiness and latkes for all!

Take me out to the ballgame,
Take me out to the crowd!
Tomorrow’s game 1 of the NLDS—
In these shoes, you sure won’t look a mess!
Let’s beat the heck out of St. Louis;
If the Phils don’t win it’s a shame!
For it’s one, two, three strikes you’re out
At the old ball game!

Yes, our Phillies are in the postseason again! Woo! Beat those Cards! If you’re lucky enough to have tickets to the game, be sure your shoes are up to snuff. How ‘bout Phillies flip flops like these?

Love the graphic print on the insole! And don’t worry; “Phillies” is written on the strap so you can still see which team you’re rooting for even if you’re wearing them. Just under $14 from CollegeGear.com.

Now, if you’re like me, you want more sparkles! Yay sparkles! Seven rows of blue sequins, a red P to pop—these are sharp. Yours for $20 from FansEdge

I’ve never really been a fan of sneaker heels, but these are winning me over!
Aren’t they sharp? The Nike Dunk High Heels have a nice solid heel, fabric upper, and lace-up fronts. Yours for $106 from Nikeheels Discounts.

Staying in to watch the game? Curl up in these:

Nice and fuzzy. (And it’s going to be cool this weekend! You’ll thank me for the fuzzy later.) You can pick these up at Walmart for $20.

Going out to celebrate? Red boots, baby!
How fierce are these? (I envision Carmen Sandiego in similar boots as she, you know, steals the pyramids from Egypt.) The Baker by Michael Antonio have a nice, soft ruched fabric shaft, 4.5-inch heel, three-quarter-inch platform, gold buckle, and side-zip closure. These rockin’ boots are also available in black, and can be yours for $79 from Zappos.

Fall Trend: Sssssssnakeskin

So we covered the fur trend for fall. Another animal-kingdom-inspired trend this season: snakeskin! More subtle than other animal prints; just as sophisticated as the classic alligator, but fresher. So! Let’s help you slither in to this trend. We’ll start with a flat:

The Jungle Flat by Mia 2 is the perfect pointy-toed flat in black snakeskin with gold studs and buckle. Great for work but still perfect for a casual weekend outfit—so versatile! Find them for $35; online only from Kmart.

The Flambeau is a gray and black snakeskin peep-toe slingback with a statement silver buckle. It has a four-inch heel and one-inch platform. Also available in six (six!) other color combos; find them at Nine West for $89.

The Brit Wedge by Lovely People has a four-inch wedge, back zipper, and all kinds of little detailing. It comes in brown snakeskin with a stacked heel and gold grommets (shown) or a really sleek black snakeskin with a black heel and silver grommets. Yours for $40 from DSW.

For just a hint of snakeskin, try the Vega by Ellen Tracy. It’s black suede, with a patterned patent bow and heel. It’s just so sleek! Yours for $99 from Macy’s.

I love these—they are serious chunks of snake! The Au Brie by Luichiny have a 4.5-inch heel and a two-inch platform, plus a peep toe, cushioned footbed, and ankle strap. They come in snake or cheetah; find them at Zappos for $90.

Now for something a little fun!

Pink! Yellow! Crazy knotted straps! The Snake Pumps by Michael Antonio are really kind of awesome. It has a 4.25-inch heel, and a zipper up the back (and elastic knotted straps) to help you keep them on. Yours from Bare Feet Shoes for $45.

This one is actually made of python. I guess I didn’t realize people still did that!

And a whole lotta python! My goodness. The Genuine Python Boot by Prada have a 4.5-inch heel, has a side zip, and are special order from Nordstrom for $2,700.
